I renewed the house insurance today. Some difference shopping round even when you shop seeking the same level of cover etc (same excesses, item covered etc)
I've been an advocate of FBD for years, but of late they are are greedy shower.
My dad being a farmer, was with them for decades, and then I went onto his car policy as a named driver and then had my own policy with them for years.
I used to have 2 jeeps, the mx5,our house (at one stage, 2 houses) and an ifor williams trailer with them, now all I have left with them is the 5 - and we'll see what they'll do to me come renewal time (so much for the loyalty eventho' I've never had a claim on them).

.......nearing the end of my rant now, but key to getting good prices is to shop round and adjust if you haven't already, the rebuild costs of your home as they've plummeted since the boom.

Real important to check what you've got down for rebuild costs, particularly if you've been with one company for a long time, and have been allowing automatic 'in-line with inflation updates' to go thru unchallenged on your direct debit.

I was belt-tightening and checking the small print earlier this year when I realised I was grossly over-insured on my house and contents. When I challenged the company specifically on the re-build costs, they were instantly able to drop my policy by €30 a month!!!!!! That's despite asking for a better deal last year, and being told that I had the best possible!

Incidentally, you can check the scale for calculating a re-build with the Society for Chartered Surveyors of Ireland or the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland. You'll also find ready-reckoners on some insurance sites, but I didn't trust anyone after that, so rang the professional organisation for assistance instead!

Stig,

How much did you lower you costs and with whom did you get the best deal?

All good advice, but itsw good to check does your policy cover site clearance for instance, because your house would need to be cleared away prior to a rebuild should the worst happen.
The RIAI are a bit off with their calculations I find, but its agood rule of thumb nonetheless.

I did'nt lower them at all as I already lowered them last year in line with the crash, but I've got good cover at 44% cheaper from Quinn than FBD.

Nice on, 44% not to be sneezed at. Better in your pocket than theirs.
